The department is located in the Rhone-Alpes region bordering the departments of Ain, Isere, Loire and Saone-et-Loire and its capital is Lyon. The Rhone department was created in 1793 when the former department of Rhone-et-Loire was split into two departments (Rhone and Loire) and its Alpine location makes for some fantastic scenery in the upper Rhone Valley, Massif central and the Alps.
Good agricultural land is found in the valleys of the Rhone, but for the most part the soil is stony and only moderately fertile- wheat, oats, rye and potatoes are extensively cultivated. However the real winner in the area is the vine producing the renowned Beaujolais wine in an area which is found in the North near Villefranche sur Soane and Beaujeu and the city of Belleville is the commercial centre of the wine trade. Fruit and nuts such as peaches, apricots, walnuts and chestnuts also grow well.
Lyon is one of the largest towns in France and is famous for its gastronomic restaurants in the town (famous Bouchons in Lyon). The centre of the city is around Presqu’île - which translates as peninsula - while Vieux Lyon groups around the three villages, St Paul, St Jean and St Georges in the eastern end of the 5th arrondissement which is worth looking at.
It is a historic city full of gardens and parks that became an important Roman settlement in the 1st century BC. It is steeped in history with relics such as the Fourviere Roman theatre or the Romanesque buildings which can be seen in the different areas of Lyon.
